On this journey, we often find ourselves looking for someone who understands — another parent walking a similar path, perhaps one whose child is a little older and can offer guidance. Or a professional who seems to have the answers.
But the truth is, as comforting as it is to find others walking beside us, it’s never exactly the same. Because even though there are so many of us on similar paths, our journeys will always be different.
Neurodiversity isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” experience. Autism in Kane looks very different from how it shows up in my friend’s daughter, even though they share the same spectrum.
And that’s okay.
Have faith in your capability as a parent. Trust your instincts — that quiet inner voice that tells you what feels right for your child. Because, ultimately, even when it doesn’t seem like it, nobody knows them better than you do.
Each day brings something new. A behaviour you didn’t expect. A sudden dislike that appears out of nowhere. But you’ll navigate it together — because it’s new for them, too.
I listen to advice and I take on board different strategies, but I’ve learned that not everything will work for Kane. His responses can differ completely from those of another child. And that’s okay too.
This road is as foreign to him as it is to me. So, we face it together — learning, adapting, and growing side by side.
