REDUCING UNNECESSARY NOISE
Unnecessary announcements and loud music can be overwhelming and distressing for autistic children, making it difficult for them to regulate and feel comfortable. Reducing these sounds helps create a calmer environment, lowers anxiety, and allows children to stay engaged without becoming overloaded. Small changes like this can make spaces far more inclusive for families.
For many autistic children, background noise isn’t just “background.”
Tannoy announcements can feel sudden and intrusive.
Music can be too loud, unpredictable, or constant.
Multiple sounds at once can blur together into something overwhelming.
It’s not always possible to filter out noise in the way others might. Instead, everything can come through at once—loud, intense, and hard to escape.
This can quickly lead to stress, anxiety, or sensory overload.
What might seem like a small adjustment—lowering volume, limiting announcements, or creating quieter areas—can have a huge impact on how accessible a space feels.
Because when the noise is reduced, children can focus, regulate, and enjoy the environment around them.
It’s not about silence.
It’s about balance.
And for families, it can mean the difference between having to leave early—or being able to stay and enjoy the experience.
This Autism Awareness Month, let’s turn the volume down and make space for calm.
