Autism Acceptance Month
Day 10 :purple_heart:

PROVIDING CLEAR ROUTINES

Providing clear routines in society could look like shops displaying quiet hour times clearly, schools using visual timetables, leisure centres outlining session structures, or airports showing step-by-step journey guides. Simple things like countdown announcements before closing, clear signage, and consistent processes help autistic children understand what’s happening next and feel more secure.

For many autistic children, uncertainty can be one of the biggest sources of anxiety.

Not knowing what’s coming next, how long something will last, or what’s expected of them can feel overwhelming. Even small changes to routine can cause stress if they aren’t explained or prepared for.

Clear, predictable structures help reduce that anxiety.

When a child knows what to expect, they can prepare.
When they can prepare, they can cope.
And when they can cope, they can engage.

Visual supports, clear signage, simple instructions, and consistent routines all play a part in making environments more accessible.

It’s not about making things rigid. It’s about making them understandable.

Because when the world feels predictable, it feels safer.

And when it feels safer, children have the confidence to explore, participate, and enjoy experiences that might otherwise feel out of reach.

This Autism Awareness Month, let’s make everyday spaces clearer, calmer, and more predictable for everyone.
