LOOKING BEYOND BEHAVIOUR

What may look like “bad behaviour” is often a child trying to communicate something deeper — overwhelm, anxiety, confusion, pain, or unmet needs. Compassion from bystanders in that moment, rather than judgement or stares, can make a huge difference. A kind look, patience, or simply giving space helps families feel supported and allows the child to regulate in a safer, calmer environment.

Behaviour is communication.

A child who is shouting, running, refusing, or becoming distressed isn’t choosing to be “difficult.” They’re trying to express something they may not have the words for.

It could be too much noise.
Too many demands.
A change they weren’t prepared for.

Or a build-up of feelings that have become overwhelming.

In those moments, they need support—not correction.

For parents and carers, these situations can be incredibly stressful. They’re often trying to de-escalate, keep their child safe, and manage the environment—all while feeling the weight of people watching.

That’s where understanding matters most.

Choosing not to judge.
Giving space instead of staring.
Showing patience instead of frustration.

These small actions can change how safe a moment feels—for both the child and their family.

Because when we look beyond behaviour, we start to understand the need behind it.

This Autism Awareness Month, let’s respond with compassion, not assumptions.
