Autism Acceptance Month Day 25 :purple_heart:

CHOOSING TO ASK, NOT ASSUME

Families don’t bite… well, not all of us 😊 — and most would much rather be asked a kind, respectful question than have assumptions made about them or their child. Asking “how can I help?” opens the door to understanding and support, while assumptions can lead to judgement or misunderstanding. Simple, compassionate curiosity can make families feel seen, respected, and supported in that moment.

From the outside, it’s easy to guess what’s going on.

But those guesses are often wrong.

What looks like “naughty behaviour” might be overwhelm.

What looks like “poor parenting” might be a parent doing everything they can to support their child.

Assumptions create distance.
Questions create connection.

You don’t need to have all the answers.

You don’t need to fix the situation.

Sometimes, just asking gently—“Is there anything I can do?”—is enough.

And sometimes, the answer might be “no, thank you”—and that’s okay too.

Because what matters is the approach.

Kindness.
Respect.
Willingness to understand.

These moments can completely change how supported a family feels when things are already difficult.

Because everyone deserves to be met with compassion—not judgement.

This Autism Awareness Month, let’s ask with kindness—and listen with understanding.
